Shadows view distances

This might be similar to Robert's tunnel LOD issue. I want to change the shadow distance for an object so that the shadow can be viewed from a greater distance.
Is this possible?
For example, this station roof has a shadow when viewed from this distance:
and no shadow when viewed from this distance:
Any help appreciated.
