My version of 3DS doesn't render well with Kuju materials - which material are you using for the render ? Have you tried the standard Max material ?

If you have a lot of inexplicable experiences in Max, you might want to export the model to Blender and do the normal map baking there and then use the normal map in Max? Or you try exporting from Blender to RW. Might be more difficult than just the normals baking as you need to get the animations from Max to Blender first. I don't know, but there should be a series for data formats that get produced by Max and read by Blender. One of them ought to work fair enough.
