Producing a spiral lamp post?

Producing a spiral lamp post?

How would you make a spiral lamp post in Crafter? there is a Twist Shape operation but I can't see how to produce a spiral. How would you do it in blender? just basically to give me some idea.

Blender has a screw modifier and also a (newer?) screw tool.

I would try the screw modifier first as it looks like a well tested concept. I remember playing with the curve or path modifier long ago, which followed a similar principle. I never played with spirals and screws, tough.

This is what I'm looking to produce.

Are you looking for a high poly mesh for baking or a low poly mesh? I personally would do the low poly as a simple cylinder and then bake normals and AO.

Since you spent too much time with Paul, you will want to try the Screw Tool to create the high-poly version, if only to bake the surface of a low-poly (cylinder) shape.

It does not look too hard, but then again, much of what you read on the net does not look too hard before you try it yourself.

I suppose I should be looking at low poly for a lamp post. Baking normals is something I know absolutely nothing about I'm afraid. Baking has only been introduced recently in 3D Crafter and isn't available in the version I am currently using. I think I will continue to use the more simple posts for my lamps.
I don't think I can move over to Blender, I'm too old to learn more stuff. :-)

Can you apply bump mapping in Crafter ? - I think that would produce a good solution

Cheers

xNormal would be another candidate, if 3DC exports to OBJ. xNormal will bake high poly into low poly, which is what you want for these type of normal maps.
