Found the image on Wikipedia by Googling for Staveley Ironworks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staveley_C ... on_Company

Thanks for the information, so it has nothing to do with the depot. So please don't let me distract any further.

On the case of engines, I have nothing to say. They are all great in one way or the other and a great model of each must be welcome by many. But don't ask me how many. The commercial side of things is something I will never understand. Luckily, I don't need to. But without an answer to what kind of route people like and what kind of activity the like to perform in their scenarios, it is hard to make a suggestion as to which engine to favour.

My guess is that the pressure vessel could be for storing steam, and the location needed that because it had those steam based 'fireless' engines.

Any good?

Personally, I'd rather have the pug than the 1F, but I certainly wouldn't mind it! :)

It is almost certainly a pressure vessel, probably for compressed air. Before the advent of electricity and in places where it could not be used for safety reasons, a compressed air supply offered a power source for tools, drills and so on.

I have always had a liking for the 1F with a half cab. Below is an image I first posted on UKTS in answer to the question "What steam locos do you want to see next in RailWorks" That was back in 2009 ;)

jp4712 wrote:It's an interesting structure. It looks like a pressure vessel, but of course that doesn't mean that whatever was in it was under pressure: it could have been re-used. What I'm sure of, is that the brick-and-wood structure behind is a cooling tower of the type that was in common use before the better-known concrete waisted ones. Neither a pressure vessel nor a cooling tower were seen on the typical motive power depot, so it would be interesting to know where this photo was taken.

is it a gas works retort tower?
