Steam Locomotive Physics

Steam Locomotive Physics

Postby gougha » Thu Jun 11, 2015 2:07 am

Hi all

Im building my first steam train. (See Below)

The basic modelling is done (the tender is nearly complete) and the textures are passable for the time being.

I now want to delve into the physics blueprints and try and work out how it all works. I was advised to hand it over to someone else to do the physics but I would really like to learn about it myself so that I can develop other engines in the future. I am currently using the example blueprints that came with Railworks back in the stone age.

Are there any tutorials/info etc that will help me work through the minefield of working out how to transfer the data I have found for the loco into the blueprints for TS2015

Hope someone can give me some guidance

Regards

Andy

That is sweet as a nut.

I'm in the same boat as you - I can't find any decent tutorials - or even indecent ones for that matter.

Would there be any interest in making this a community project?

Hi.

I have no problems with people throwing in there ideas but I'd really like to learn how to do it myself. Matt Peddlesden suggested I have a look at the small loco on the Isle of white route so I will start there.

I've just added the tender so it's looking better now. I will probably try and finish it off quickly after my hols next week. I need to get back to my route.

Well, that's not a silly idea either.

Great stuff, I think it's really good that you want to do it for yourself. Do you have access to the old Rail Simulator Dev Docs? Doc 2.10 "Steam Simulation Data" would be the best place to look if you want to gain a further understanding of what all of the steam simulation parameters do - some things are fairly obvious just from the name, but others aren't. Unfortunately, some of the descriptions in the doc are rather vague and therefore don't tell you very much useful information, but even so I still go back to it from time to time if I've forgotten what changing a particular field is supposed to do (e.g. does increasing the value increase steam generation, or decrease it?). If you haven't got the doc, I could email it to you.

Thanks Chris.

I've just had a look at the old wiki which I'd forgotten about. Unfortunately it links to a pdf which is no longer available so if you could send me the docs that would be much appreciated. I will send you a pm with my email address.

Progress is stopped at the moment while I enjoy the sun......and the heat....of cyprus.
