UKTrainSim Freeware Pack - Cumbrian Mountain Express
The UKTrainSim Freeware Project has a dedicated web site containing lots of information and resources. It can be found at uktrainsim.com/FreewarePacks.

What's this all about?
The UKTrainSim Freeware Project is here to make your life easier. By collecting together freeware items and re-skins for RailWorks donated by the community into simple to download and install packs we hope to achieve the following core aims:
  • Free
  • Simple to install
  • Reliable resource for freeware developers
  • Significantly increase the amount of free content available
There are packs of assets, rolling stock, routes and scenarios and each one covers a particular theme. If you want to browse the available packs visit The Packs web page.

What's in This Pack?
These trains recreate the early days of steam rail tours in the 1980’s when travelling over the Settle & Carlisle Railway was the icing on the cake in the main line ‘steam’ calendar. The tour starts with a high speed journey down the West Coast Main Line to Carnforth hauled by a class 86 electric blue locomotive. Then continues a circular steam tour outwards via Shap to Carlisle and back to Preston via the Settle and Carlisle line. It then returns to London behind the Class 86 electric blue locomotive again.

The tour leaves Euston at 07:10 hauled by a Class 86 electric blue loco. The train stops at Watford Junction, Milton Keynes, Rugby (where passengers from Northampton join by service train), Nuneaton, Crewe and Preston. We join the train at Preston. We continue north along the WCML to Carnforth where we change locomotives and LMS Jubilee 5690 'Leander' takes over the train.

On leaving Carnforth we begin climbing almost immediately and passing through Oxenholme Lake District encounter the first severe gradient up to Grayrigg. We then travel through the beautiful Lune Gorge, passing Tebay and gaining speed for the iconic ‘ascent to Shap’. After crossing the Cumbrian Fells we descend to Penrith, and then head for Carlisle. There will be around an hour and a half in Carlisle, providing time to explore this ancient city with its castle, cathedral, Tullie House Museum and Lanes Shopping Centre.

Our train leaves Carlisle at around 14:30 and joins the Settle & Carlisle Railway, one of the most well known and best loved stretches of railway line in Britain. We soon begin climbing, and then at Appleby, we stop for our steam locomotive to take on water. The climbing continues through scenic Kirkby Stephen, towards the highest railway summit in England at Ais Gill, 1169 feet above sea level. We pass over high viaducts, including the famous one at Ribblehead, and through tunnels. There are magnificent views across the Fells and to the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. We should have a fast run out of the hills, through Settle, until we stop again for our locomotive to take on water.

The journey continues through Hellifield, Clitheroe and Blackburn to Preston, where we say goodbye to the tour as the Class 86 electric blue loco takes over the train for a fast run back to London.

Additional Considerations:
  • Some of the AI services do not use typical rolling stock, this is a trade off between true life operations and keeping the amount of DLC required to a minimum.
  • The timings within some of the scenario's have been condensed to keeping the scenario's interesting and engaging
The best way to find out what is in this pack is to browse the gallery of each asset it contains.

I've gone from 'fit for firing' to 'full time fireman'. Does this mean I can fire those who are 'fit for firing'?

I'd just like to acknowledge the work put in by Michael (Yerkes) for his testing and superbly detailed reports to help iron out any problems and Jim for putting the pack together.

Hopefully everything runs as smooth as silk for all. Just let me know if it doesn't.

Excellent point Phil. I somehow managed to miss adding Michael on the credits in the download details. He is mentioned in the manual.

Sorry Michael and I shall fix that now.

I wouldn't have noticed either! Very kind of you to credit me, but all the hard work was Phil's; my role was deriving a lot of pleasure and enjoyment. I am sure others will get the same - it's a great pack.
