David Braben, a pioneer of computer gaming - he and Ian Bell wrote the game Elite for the BBC Micro in their bedrooms as teenagers back in the early 1980's - and father of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, was made an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list this summer. The award cited his work for the video-game and computer industries both in Britain and abroad. In 2012 he raised funds through Kickstarter to develop Elite Dangerous as an update of the game that spread from the Acorn to so many other platforms in the 1980's: a whole generation learned to dock wireframe spaceships and become intergalactic traders. The campaign raised £1.5 million, and the new game is to launch later this year.
