Nice one Bill, a fine career path to follow. Many moons ago I worked in a hospital as a porter and loved the camaraderie among the staff. Being part of helping people to recover from illness or accident gives a lot of job satisfaction and a good feeling of well-being that I've never quite since captured. I felt something similar being part of the 'railway family' until I got bored of going up and down the same few metal tracks every day. Didn't quite have the same buzz as wheeling people around the corridors and listening to some amazing life stories and experiences. Humbling too.

All these burnt-out people still in their old job cost society so much in collateral damage that I would make a career change in the middle of your professional life obligatory. Seriously. And best change between something with a strong social/selfless aspect and something not so. Like burnt-out teachers becoming accountants or anything where they so their job without much interaction. And former executives working in a kindergarten (like a friend does).

Serious soul search around the death of a parent without distraction in some job is also highly recommended. I did it recently. It is really stunning how radical you can get once the cacophony of superficial must-haves is changed for the silent observation that every year you spent is one that is gone for good and that even with all the high-tech fluff everyone still dies and most do it earlier than expected. So it is a good idea to start the life at which you want to look back then rather sooner than later.

Good luck with your new job. I did that for civil service. My back hurt after that, but meeting all these people certainly is very enriching.

Good luck Bill
I've gone from 'fit for firing' to 'full time fireman'. Does this mean I can fire those who are 'fit for firing'?
