Rail Tours and Dead Diesels

Can someone inform me of the full purpose of the 'Dead' Diesel on the back end of a steam rail tour?

Are they just there for reversal?
Are they there for back up or banking?
Is it only on certain routes where they are needed?
Is it only with certain steam engines?

Much regards to any who reply

Phil

Hi Phil,

I think they are usually there for insurance and/or to avoid run rounds.

Some are left ticking over on occasion to provide ETH, but many steam tours these days seem to have a generator van for this purpose,

Cheers,

The route doesn't often matter. WCRC do it almost of second nature these days.
