I could use some tech help on a Laptop

Postby briyeo » Thu Jun 26, 2014 8:58 am

I just wondered if someone could advise me on getting my Laptop up and working again. The factory restore and the restore DVD's I made when it was new have both failed. So I got myself a recovery/reinstall DVD off ebay, and decided to just go for a clean install of Win Vista Home Premium 32 bit using my original product Key.
That has all gone well it seems, but now I need to get it using the Nvidia 9600M GT card that is installed, I have located the correct latest drivers. I haven't tried to install them yet but wondered if someone could walk me through the process so I will know what to expect.
It's not an area I'm too confident with at all. Will just installing the drivers sort it all out for me automatically ? I wish :)

Thanks for any help or advice.

Hi Brian,

If you just need to sort out the display resolution then installing the video drivers should allow that to happen. It might be worth checking in device manager for anything else that needs setting up with drivers. Some can be quite obscure.

I am happy to help if I can. I used to do this all the time as it was my old day job.

Thanks Jim, I won't be trying anything until later this evening, but one thing that bothered me was that the Nvidia card doesn't show in Device manager as yet, but there are no drivers or any Nvidia program installed as yet.
Is the laptop already using the Nvidia card but using some standard VGA drivers in the absence of dedicated ones do you think?

It is probably using some standard work with anything VGA drivers.

If you are willing to download and run something called TeamViewer then I could help you directly. TeamViewer allows me to see and control your mouse so I could do the install with you.

You have to send me a special ID and password when you run TeamViewer that allows me to connect.

I will be on-line tonight from about 8pm. If this is of any use / interest, run the TeamViewer software (no need to install it just run) and PM me the ID and password. Then DO NOT close the software leave it running and I will pick up the ID and password ASAP.

Or get steam running and send me a message on their (Username is Nobkins).

Seems I didn't need to worry Jim, installed the Nvidia drivers and all went smoothly. Only trouble I had was getting an internet connection as the drivers were missing from the adapters, but I found those on one of the "restore" discs . Thanks for being ready to help :) Cheers.
