Problems with Verify Game Cache

Postby eyore » Mon Aug 18, 2014 9:36 am

Yesterday morning I had issues with the BP editor (ConvertToGeo couldn't find Legacy Shaders) and then when I tried to run the game it wouldn't start. Obviously I had some sort of file corruption so I ran Verify Game Cache which said I needed to update >400MB and started to download. After reaching 29% it stopped downloading and nothing I do can get it to complete the download.

I have messaged Steam support, but knowing the speed of their response I thought I'd ask here for help.

For info, I have tried the following:-
A re-run of Verify Game Cache says files are 100% ok
Renamed .blob file to ClientRegistryOld.blob
Deleted and reacquired Steam files, excluding Steammapps and Userdata

Any help greatly appreciated.

Further to the above, I just tried running TS2014 by clicking the Railworks.exe file and it sort of works!

However, the game runs in a window (see below) which allows only a partial view of the screen, so I can't access most buttons or play the game correctly.

I am even more confused now.

Of course take a back up before doing anything!

Then try this.

Exit steam
Delete (or rename / move etc) \Steam\SteamApps\appmanifest_24010.acf
Launch steam
It will say the game is not installed
Click to install it
it will run a verify when you install and find all the existing files and only download changed / missing items.

Sorry Jim, but that didn't work. I had to re-install my other games but not TS2014!

Very strange.

So other games said they were no longer installed but TS2014 said it was still oK??

All my other games are requiring re-installing but TS 2014 still shows as Update Recquired, but nothing happening.

I think I have identified the cause of my original problem, which is missing .xml files (config.xml etc), but I would have thought these would be re-acquired with the Verify Cache?

Looks like I'm facing the dreaded Delete Local Content!

Hope I have not made the issue worse.

Backup / move your assets and content folder (the majority of the content that has to be downloaded). Then delete the railworks folder by way of steam using "Delete Local Content". Then make the railworks folder again and put your content back in and choose "install Railworks".

That should at least minimise the amount of downloading required.

Hopefully not too late.. sometimes a stuck download can be an ISP problem or download server location problem. Years ago TalkTalk started messing about throttling ports that could be used for torrents, etc.. and this had a negative effect on Steam as it uses some non standard ports. But I haven't seen any reports of ISP's messing about with ports recently.

Alternatively Steam can select the "Best" server, but it's not always the best :P You probably already know, but go into 'Steam' / ' Settings' / and into the 'Downloads' section on the left hand side. You'll spot the Download location on the right hand side of the same window. In my case it's blank as the automatic setting is currently okay for me. This only effects where you download from, so you're not necessarily stuck to choosing London / Manchester for UK download locations. Try using something obscure, as sometimes they are so under used that you'll be less likely to run into congestion issues which can stop or slow downloads, even if you have to endure a slightly reduced download speed on a server 500+miles away compared to one that is only 50+ miles away.

Steam will ask you to restart when you choose a new download location, so do that and just keep trying until you find one that gets you past the stuck download.

I went ahead with the Delete Local Content option and that seems to have solved the issue except for one minor detail - I forgot to back up the manuals folder, doh!
