Re: Station Sign Boards

Postby Terrier060 » Wed Mar 04, 2015 12:08 am

Hi All
I have at last, thanks to the excellent tutorials by Jim/Nobkins and others on Blender, managed to write a tutorial on how to make simple station signs. I am not an expert on Blender, in fact I have only been using it for a couple of weeks, but there may be beginners out there, like myself who would find this useful. I am very new to this site and I don't know how to submit it. It is written in Word and has a lot of diagrams so may take up quite a lot of space. There is an example of one of the signs in my gallery. I do not want to do anything stupid that would take up a lot of space on the site, so would be very pleased if someone could advise me on how to go about it. Also perhaps someone familiar with Blender could take a quick look at it to see if it is suitable for you to publish.

Many thanks

Ed

Sorry it's me again - thank you Hack for your kind words. How do I go about putting it on the website? It is quite a large file with lots of Blender diagrams. Do I just post it on the 3-D Object Creation > Blender site? I don't want to annoy anyone by putting a large amount of data on the site - it is a WORD document at the moment.

First off - Thanks for the invite - My name is Jay but go by Leadcatcher on most forums - My son's gave me that name when I tried to play on-line shooters with them since that was what I did mostly - catch lead ..

I have been a long time player of Train Simulator starting back with TS2013 - I am not a developer per-se, but want to move into scenario development and the such. My consultanting business keeps me on the road for 6 to 7 months out of the year, so many times I am limited to just reading about this hobby.

I hope to learn more about the inner worksings of TS, scenario and possible route development and thought this would be a much better place to do than the "general" discussion boards.

Again looking forward to learning and hopefully in the future adding to the conversations contained on this forum

Hello folks,

I'm John, joining here thanks to an invite from Mike/Weaselworks. Having looked around, I can see I'm joining a great group of very able enthusiasts with many names I recognise from UKTS. Thanks also to Jim for running the site.

I'm not an avid 'sim' player - having spent much of my working life chasing production or project timetables. However, I've enjoyed the occasional trundle up and down various routes. My preference is for narrow gauge - my first experience of railways was on the Talyllyn early in the preservation days ( dates me somewhat eh?).
I started train sim experience with MSTS and was quickly curious about how the modelling was achieved. I had a brief go at route building and scenario creation without much success, then moved on to try modelling with GMAX. I also tried 'Sketchup' when Paul Gausden/'Decapod' released the MSTS exporter. After that, and with (early) retirement beckoning, I switched to 3DCanvas as it was at the time.
Using 3DC I managed to get one MSTS model completed and uploaded with a couple more still 'nearly complete' but short of some key details before a bout of illness and surgery got the better of me.

Despite the quirks, frequent hang-up's and uncertainty about support, I've quite enjoyed using 3DC. I'm now - slowly - attempting to get some models for TS20xx completed and usable. Early attempts were far from successful and I know I have quite a bit to learn about correct setting up of blueprints and use of shaders. I look forward to joining in where and when I can!

Cheers

Hi all,

I missed this thread, so will make a post now. My name's Mike and I've been involved in Train Sim since MSTS was young. I live in Canberra, Australia and I'm looking down the barrel of fifty. On uktrainsim I'm sp762, but new approach so new username!

As a content creator, I tend to specialise in narrow gauge and industrial subjects, road vehicles and particularly the War Department Light Railways. But I also dabble is scenario building and route construction, as well as standard gauge stuff - I built freight stock for the Coals to Newcastle route in MSTS, for example.

But that was ten years ago, and like a lot of the old stalwarts, I fell over the learning curve required to make things for railworks etc. particularly in the art department. So now I'm starting from scratch again. But the good news is that if you can Texture a cube in 3DC, you can make models!

I've spent the last day and a half building driving wheels for a loco using Mike Rennie's tutorial...

Thanks for listening and for the support so far!

Mike

Hi all,

My name is Cedric and I am french, I live in Strasbourg, I like very much simulation software, but the first one by rank is the rail simulation, I appreciate a lot the Train Sim, maybe old now but still good, now is Train Sim from Dovetail, no bad too. I am working on routes, I begin already since last year, but give up due that no time, or too tired, and sometimes problems of convert, because I work very easyly from Sketchup, but sometimes, textures give problems with 3dsmax, and I gived up 3dcrafter because unstable. My reason to be member in this forum, like I said to the admin, it is because I hope I can resolve some problems from Sketchup to the finished products.

My project is to do the tramway of Strasbourg, but I have to update, because since I finished the tracks, I have to extend, due that the real one, will ready soon.

I hope too of course, I can bring my contribution, to some are in help, or maybe develop some topics like debate and more...

Hello everyone - I'm Matt, thanks to Jim for extending an invite to me. I've been using Train sim since it's initial incarnation, and have plodded along recreating the Cross Gates to Wetherby branch. It's really just a personal interest project, as I live in a village on the line, and my in-laws live in Wetherby - I dread to think of the mish mash of assets I've used over the years that I've dipped in and out of working on it. But I've finally run out of ways to "make do" with certain buildings and features, so I hope to learn how to make objects, texture them and get them into the game. I'm under no illusion how tricky it will be - I'm nothing of an artist, I've never done any 3d modelling, but I've always been interested in how people make assets for their (and others) projects.

So I guess I'll be starting with getting a cube into the game, then something basic, then something textured, then who knows!

I've currently got Sketchup and 3d Crafter 9.3 (Pro) installed. I guess I'll need something like PSP or GIMP, and a lot of reading and watching youtube. And probably a million questions when things don't happen as I think!

Cheers, Matt

Welcome Matt. Great to see you brought along a "can do" attitude - I'm sure you can be making basic scenery assets in no time.
