And we've got a cab. Ignore the untextured bits for now, I'll do them when I feel like it.

Stupid question time: How are tender fronts handled? I know the default black 5 just loads an extra LOD at about 3 meters.

Wow that does look very good ( and very accurate! ). The way I do animated tender controls is to have an invisible control modelled as part of the cab allowing you to grab it, but then the animation and model for say the hand brake itself is actually on the tender ( a bit of smoke and mirrors as it were ).

I nicked a lot of inspiration by browsing through the J50's textures. Please don't sue me. I would doubt the accuracy ;). But given the Dutch amazing preservation efforts* I think I've done well enough. Love the trick with the tender by the way! I assume some consist messages are needed to have tender controls actually moving on the tender model? Challenge accepted!

*Story time! After the official end of steam, with the last 'official' steam train being hauled by no. 3737, engine number 1794 (which is of the same class as the one I'm doing) was still in use as a stationary boiler. Now stationary boilers need a coal supply, and every now and then old 1794 would traverse the length of the station, pick up some coal, and shunt back again under it's own power. Until the director of the railways came along in his inspection train and saw this. Apparently he ordered it scrapped personally. Or so the story goes.

Reminds me a bit of the story of Maude and I think a few other NBR J36, the engnies were officially withdrawn in September 1967 I think, but the shed they were meant to be withdrawn from kept using them until December when someone ratted them out! ( bet there were a few red faces in the higher ups when they realised these engines were still running when they were meant to be cut up! :D ). Yeah a few consist messages are needed but its nothing major, even DTG can do it ;)

Thanks Paul,

Brass (and red copper, as I was pointed out by someone who knows more) are terribly difficult to emulate. I think I've kinda cracked it, at least in the viewport shader it looks pretty good. I hope the PBR shaders of UE4 make this easier.

Yep, TrainUbershader is really well named. I've only recently found out that it will do Alpha cut on the diffuse texture if Alpha Test Mode=1 is set for the Material. Handy for things like wire mesh, which is needed on the latest thing I'm working on.

Really? That's quite nice! I'll keep that in the back of my mind.

A diffuse, RGB spec + A Gloss and normals map would be my trainomniubershader though. Haven't seen that one yet...
