Important History
This route does NOT overwrite existing versions of Blyth & Tyne. It has it's own route folder so you can run older versions and this new version side by side.

Version History
A full version history including the changes made in the most recent update is available on the UKTS Freeware Packs web site.

UKTrainSim Freeware Route Pack - North East Rails
The UKTrainSim Freeware Project has a dedicated web site containing lots of information and resources. It can be found at uktrainsim.com/FreewarePacks.

What's this all about?
The UKTrainSim Freeware Project is here to make your life easier. By collecting together freeware items and re-skins for RailWorks donated by the community into simple to download and install packs we hope to achieve the following core aims:

  • Free
  • Simple to install
  • Reliable resource for freeware developers
  • Significantly increase the amount of free content available
There are packs of assets, rolling stock, routes and scenarios and each one covers a particular theme. If you want to browse the available packs visit The Packs web page.

Super Fast Free Downloads for all using BitTorrents!
The packs can be downloaded for free from this site using your browser but once the available bandwidth is used up for the current calender month the downloads will only be possible via BitTorrent. We would love to have unlimited browser downloads but unfortunately bandwidth costs money. By using BitTorrents we can provide free downloads to as many people as possible.

For those unfamiliar with BitTorrents we have created a guide to downloading content from this web site using BitTorrents. All you need is a BitTorrent client (which is free!).

Where ever possible please use the BitTorrent download option.

Please do Seed (allow others to BitTorrent from you) once your BitTorrent download is complete.

What's in This Pack?
In this version the route is a representation of the railways in Tyneside and the surrounding areas in the early 1970s. Included are the following areas:

The Blyth & Tyne Railway ran from the Tyne coal staithes at North Shields to the Northumberland collieries in the Ashington and Blyth area, and along the North Blyth Branch to Blyth power station and Cambois depot and yards. By the early 1970s the passenger services had long finished and the line was then only used for freight traffic; mainly coal and aluminium from the Ashington area. Coal was also transported to Blyth power station from multiple coal fields utilising the line.

The Backworth NCB System included the lines to Fenwick and Weetslade Collieries and the line down to Northumberland Dock on the banks of the River Tyne. The NCB railways connecting the local pits in this area were in very poor condition by the 1970s and were still using steam as traction on the trains right up to the closure of the collieries in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

The North Tyne Loop is the commuter line running from Newcastle Central station to Tynemouth on the coast and returning via Benton and Gosforth Junction back to Newcastle. The line was operated by third rail electric traction until the late 1960s when it was replaced by first generation diesel units which operated the Tyne Loop until the early 1980s. It was then modified again into the revolutionary Metro rapid transport system which operates the line to the present day.

The Riverside Branch leaves the North Tyne Loop at Percy Main and heads along the north bank of the Tyne passing heavy industrial areas and shipyards to Carville and Walker. Then it returns back up to riverside junction at Byker where it rejoins the mainline to Manors. By the 1970s there were only a couple of trains each way for the workforce from the shipyards; they ran their last services in 1973. Freight continued to use the line to a scrapyard into the 1980s before full closure.

Newcastle to Killingworth (E.C.M.L). From Newcastle a short section of the East Coast Main Line has been created to the reception sidings at Camperdown. This line passes Heaton sidings and Benton Junction were it has access to the Tyne Loop and the Blyth & Tyne Railway.

The pack comes Quick Drive enabled and includes a selection of scenarios to drive. Each scenario details the UKTS Freeware Packs and DLC required in the description.

A Very Big THANK YOU!
It goes without saying that the packs would not exist without the community coming together and supporting it. Many members of the community have offered words of encouragement, support, time, energy and much more. Throughout the development of the Freeware Pack Project I have made every attempt to record the donations and support people have given. Please take a moment to acknowledge all the people who have helped by visiting the Credits page.
